Hello HMEM,

This isn't exactly a machining blunder but there's still several lessons to be learned here.

Tonight was the wife and I's wedding anniversary. After a long day at the plant a good crockpot meal of chicken was just the ticket to lift my spirits. The wining and dining over...it was time to clean-up. And that's when the chicken gravy went down into the burner knobs on our gas stove range with electric ignition.

"Tick,tick,tick,tick,tick...."

Anyone who's had a gas stove...

Model Engineer Magazine

Lun, 08/16/2021 - 14:02
Good day. As a novice member of this forum I trust this is in the right place. I have tried to get back copies of the magazine but I believe the archive no longer functions. There was a series of articles on the Stuart Twin-V Oscillator some time ago in the magazine and I am looking (thus far unsuccessfully) for copies of that/those article/s. The article reference numbers are 4396, 3498, 4399, 4400 and 4401. Can anyone help? Thanks and regards. Brian

Rudy Kouhoupt Copperhead Steam Roller

Lun, 08/16/2021 - 13:57
Hi, All,

I'm kinda new to this site, but I have a real interest in model engineering and have built a Rudy beam engine and restored a Rudy Case traction engine wannabe. What I'd like to do now is build a Rudy "Copperhead" steam roller, but I can't find the plans anywhere.

Can someone direct me to a source for these plans?

Thanks.

IC Hit & Miss engine coolant.

Lun, 08/16/2021 - 09:08
I have just about completed the build of my 1913 Fairbanks Morse tractor. It has an H&M engine with an external radiator. The cylinder is a wet cast iron sleeve but the coolant jacket is steel. I am concerned about internal rust. What kind of coolant should one use that is an easy cleanup. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Bore stroke ratio

Lun, 08/16/2021 - 08:10
What is the result of making a larger or smaller bore/stroke ratio. Presently I have an engine with 1.25 bore with 1.5 stroke. I want this engine to run slower. As is usually the case with these small engines power is not a large factor. We want it to run smoothly.

I can quite easily change stroke to 1.75 without too much trouble. The rule seems to be that the longer stroke will run slower. Engines I have built have a bore /stroke ratio of .5 to .9. The engine which presently runs the...

Gypsy Engine

Lun, 08/16/2021 - 06:54
Hi
I was wondering if anyone would be interested in buying Gypsy castings? I had a set made for myself and the foundry has more made. I bought the prints from John Chenery about 4 years ago, and he said he will sell the prints but not the castings. I have tried to email John again, but he must have changed his email address. If anyone knows how to contact him I would appreciate it.

Hi All,
I have had the plans for a while, and have finally made a start on it. Delivery from the metal munger arrived. Started with the rear plate.

Gatling Gun

Dom, 08/15/2021 - 23:15
A little while back I mentioned in a post that I was working on a Gatling gun. I was asked to post photos but declined thinking it would be considered off subject. A moderator “Kvom” advised that a Gatling gun post was acceptable, so I posted a few photos of the project in progress without any complaints. The project is now complete and I would like to present it here.

The American ATF does not consider the Gatling as a machine gun as each shot is loaded cocked and fired mechanically by...

Wanted: Little Hercules plans and notes

Dom, 08/15/2021 - 22:32
I'm looking for a set of plans and notes for a Shores Little Hercules engine from someone who has finished theirs. I bought a kit a while back from a guy who was cleaning out his father's estate. The seller could not find the documentation when he did a cursory check. Yes, I know that someone is now selling the kits again. I am trying to find an alternate source that is less expensive than the distributor's current price. Alternatively, I'll also consider a whole kit (including...

FS casting for Wright Radial

Dom, 08/15/2021 - 22:23
These are the best castings I have ever seen They are die cast not sand so finish is really nice. I bought these years ago from the guy in Norway I think. The flying club there
commissioned a professional machinist to build the engine and then sold castings to defray the cost. Building instructions included. I had dreams of using these on a v twin but
realistically will never happen so I would sell them. I think they are worth $US100.

T head engine by Brian

Dom, 08/15/2021 - 21:33
Today seen the beginning of a new engine.---The design phase, at least. After recently seeing an Upshur T head coming together on HMEM and a post by Vederstein about building a T head engine I thought that would be an interesting engine to design and build. I'm in no rush to start building, but I know how that generally works. I spent most of today bringing the design along to this stage, and will probably finish up the cylinder head tomorrow...

A Dummy Engine

Dom, 08/15/2021 - 15:03
I found this article on my old blog and just had to re-post it. This was written by Bob Lane some 20 years ago and it is just superb how to he can make something look like an engine from literally rubbish. A great way to add realism to a radio controlled model plane is to make a dummy engine:

Excello power feed

Dom, 08/15/2021 - 09:41
I'm looking for information on the installation of a Servo/Align type power feed on the X axis of my mill. I picked up a Chinese table feed but there is no adapter for the type of table I have. I have no problem building what I need but instead of reinventing the wheel I'm looking for at least pictures of an installation on my type of table as the Bridgeport style adapter is not correct.

Aero Engine

Dom, 08/15/2021 - 01:43
This is my first go at joining a forum and determining how it all works. In 2014 I was able to get a number of castings for a 1/6 size Pratt and Whitney Wasp Junior Radial Engine. I have done some machining and due to a number of reasons I have had to leave the project.
I am hopeful that I can get back to it soon.

The item that I would like to 'find' is the 9 cylinder head castings, which I understand were on sale in those days.

I wonder if somewhere in some-ones parts boxes there might be...

Use a non-contact infrared thermomator as a pyrometer?

Sáb, 08/14/2021 - 04:28
Hi Guys

As the title says, I am wondering if a cheap infrared thermometer could be used to measure the temperature of a pot of molten aluminum. I have been casting aluminum for several years and have never had a pyrometer, but judged pouring temperature by color and fluidity of the melt. It usually works fine, but I would like to be more precise.

I was in Harbor Freight the other day and saw an infrared thermometer that was rated to 2200 degrees F (I think).

Have any of you experienced...

3/16 rod

Dom, 07/11/2021 - 22:06
Used to get 3/16 steel rod for model boat propeller shafts. Was able to easily drill 1/16 hole and thread 10-32. All rod available now is too hard to drill or tap. Not sure what it was that I bought in the past that was so forgiving.

Home Foundry

I built my first furnace back in 2012, and have experimented with oil and propane burners ever since.

I melted aluminum first, and that was pretty easy. You can melt aluminum as easily as Zamak (in my opinion) using the same propane burner and just slightly more heat.
Zamak has more mass to it.

I really wanted to master pouring gray iron, and that took a figure out.
If you know what you are doing, casting gray iron is not much more difficult than casting aluminum, although there is a lot...

My self-made knurler

Dom, 07/11/2021 - 19:54
A long time ago I bought 2 dies to build a knurler, due to lockdown for covid I found the time to build it.
I started with 3 pieces of C45 steel that I worked and grinded.

Dom, 07/11/2021 - 19:44
Hullo, I looking for ideas really. I retired from precision engineering, college workshop technician and 30 years in a shipyard and now have a small Colchester student and similar size vertical mill. I have been making the Quorn t/c grinding machine, which has been a challenge but enjoyable.Being me I am looking to remake the grinding spindle with a different design, perhaps angular contact bearings , just because I can, nothing wrong with the original design by the way. I'd welcome ideas on...
